Question 1

What does OralBoardCoach do?

Accepted Answer

OralBoardCoach is an AI mock oral board for US public-safety applicants. A practice panel asks oral board questions one at a time, then either probes your answers with neutral follow-ups or runs a strict timed board with none. Afterward it scores six dimensions with quotes from your own answers, rewrites your weakest answers and gives you three next steps.

Question 2

Is the first board really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Your first full mock oral board is free and comes with a summary debrief; you need an account, but no card. Paid plans add the full debrief on every board, drills by question type, unlimited boards, the strict timed board and an answer bank.

Question 3

Which roles does it cover?

Accepted Answer

It covers police officer, firefighter, deputy sheriff and corrections officer, and 911 dispatcher boards. Every role is scored on the same six dimensions.

Question 4

What is the difference between the probing board and the strict board?

Accepted Answer

On the probing board, the panel asks neutral follow-ups to clarify, expand on or check your answers, the way many agency boards do. The strict board shows each question once, without rephrasing, runs a timer and asks no follow-ups, like the timed or recorded formats some departments use. The strict timed board is part of the paid plans.

Question 5

How does scoring work?

Accepted Answer

Each board is scored on six dimensions: Motivation & job knowledge, Judgment & problem solving, Integrity & accountability, Interpersonal & community skills, Communication, and Composure & presence. Each one gets a score from 0 to 4, where 2 means you meet the bar, backed by quotes from your own answers. This is our practice scale, not any agency's score, and it does not predict a hiring decision.

Question 6

Are these the questions my department will actually ask?

Accepted Answer

No. Our questions are practice prompts modeled on publicly posted agency guides and coach lists, not any agency's actual questions. Agencies keep their test content confidential. Practicing each question type prepares you for whatever version you get.

Question 7

What happens to my answers?

Accepted Answer

Your answers are processed by an AI model through our hosting platform's AI gateway so the panel can respond and score them. We do not use your answers for training, and you can delete them.

Question 8

Does my department use an oral board?

Accepted Answer

Check its posted hiring process. Many agencies use one, but some large agencies don't at entry level: NYPD, FDNY, CHP, Chicago PD, Houston PD, Seattle PD and CDCR list no entry-level oral board in their published steps. Processes change by cycle, so look at the current posting.

Question 9

What should I wear to an oral board?

Accepted Answer

Wear clean, conservative business clothes that fit well, and follow any dress instructions in your notice. Some agencies list appearance and grooming among the areas they evaluate, so treat your clothes as part of a professional first impression. Our simulator never scores appearance.

Question 10

Can it help me answer questions about my background?

Accepted Answer

It can help you practice answering truthfully and clearly, but it will not help you hide or soften anything. Be honest and complete on your application and in every interview; Houston PD, for example, says drug use is not an automatic disqualifier but dishonesty about it is. If you mention something sensitive from your past, the panel won't quote, score or save it in your report. We can't tell you whether something is disqualifying and we don't give legal advice, so check the agency's published standards or ask its recruiter or background unit.

Question 11

Can I get a refund?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Ask within 7 days of purchase and we refund you, no questions asked.

Question 12

Can I answer by voice?

Accepted Answer

Yes. In supported browsers you can dictate your answers instead of typing them. Speaking out loud is better practice for an oral board, so use it when you can.

Question 13

Is OralBoardCoach affiliated with any agency?

Accepted Answer

No. OralBoardCoach is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any police department, sheriff's office, fire department, corrections agency or emergency-communications center. Questions are practice prompts modeled on publicly posted candidate guides, not any agency's actual questions, and scores are our practice scale, not any agency's score.

Question 14

Will a good practice score mean I pass my board?

Accepted Answer

No one can promise that. Our scores use a practice scale built from publicly described rating factors, and agency rubrics are usually unpublished or restricted. Use your score to find your weakest dimension, then practice it.
